As of 8:30 am ET on January 22, 2024, most students must include a provincial attestation letter (PAL) from the province or territory where they plan to study with their study permit application.

Eligibility requirements of a study permit

  • you must have an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution DLI;

  • you have to prove you have enough money to pay for your tuition fees; living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada; and return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada;

  • you must obey the law, have no criminal record and get a police certificate (if required);

  • you must be in good health and get a medical exam (if required);

  • prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires.
